In this article, Ed Welch argues that the struggle with eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia) is complex. Anorexia is legalistic and requires rigid control. Bulimia is licentious and out-of-control. Both put self, not God, at the center of a person’s life. Welch maintains that a simple Bible verse will not solve these life-limiting problems. Change will happen only when a person evaluates his or her relationship with God and lets go of self-developed rule-keeping behavior (in regard to food). Welch concludes that, to do this, a person must search God’s Word, seek counsel from wise people, tell the truth, and set out on a new course towards victory over food obsessions.
