In this article, Alfred Poirier argues that people have a hard time taking criticism, and seek to defend our pride, name, reputation, and glory because of the “idol of self and our desire for self-justification.” Poirier maintains that the Bible commends the ability to listen to criticism and Christ’s cross creates a dynamic that makes us able to listen. He argues that in believing the cross, I agree with God’s judgment of me and agree with God’s justification of me. Poirier argues that, in other words, no one can criticize me more than the cross has. And the most devastating criticism turns out to be the finest mercy. He concludes his article giving constructive ways to give criticism.
