In this article, Jeffrey Boyd argues that the Bible is the greatest textbook of psychiatry ever written, and that humans cannot be understood apart from the God-human relationship. Boyd takes his own profession to task for ignoring the “soul,” as the Scriptures portray the inner and essential life of mankind. He maintains that the secular mental health movement and Christianity are in competition, because the former is a kind of secular religion. Boyd concludes the article with two case studies of troubled people who made significant changes as they found the grace of God. A response to this article is written in a Letter to the Editor in JBC 16:2.
