In this article, J. Scott Thibodo discusses the topic of biblical joy from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Thibodo worked as a missionary in Belfast, Northern Ireland and was struck at the cheerfulness of the people there in spite of great political unrest. Upon returning to America, he found many had a lack of joy in a land of blessings. Thibodo describes Paul’s doctrine of “joy-in-spite-of” that emerges from his letter to the Philippians.
