Recovering God in the Age of Therapy

Journal of Biblical Counseling 12:1

In this article, Gary Shogren argues that healing has become an umbrella term for what we can expect from God in repairing our personal problems, our broken relationships with others, and our relationship with God. Shogren examines how the Bible itself uses the term “healing,” both literally and as a metaphor. He concludes that the metaphor becomes increasingly misleading the more it becomes the controlling description of what God is doing. In conclusion, Shogren observes that the metaphor can mislead people about God, ourselves, and our relationship with God when it replaces other more direct and concrete ways that the Bible describes these things.
