In this article, Heather Davis argues that the world’s unrealistic emphasis on beauty constantly bombards American women and introduces self-centered havoc to their lives. She probes the interplay between cultural values and personal responsibility when it comes to obsession with physical appearance. We are “willing victims” of the deviant standards that validate or stigmatize people based on looks. Davis concludes that God, who defines true beauty, sets us free from these unrealistic worldly standards.
