In this article, Michael Gembola recounts how he was inspired by David Powlison’s emphasis on God’s intention to not only save his people but to also make them good. Whereas most counseling is problem-centered, Powlison’s focus was more positive, involving a comprehensive view of the Christian life. Building on this premise, Gembola uses the principles of virtue formation to propose re-centering the focus of counseling to a hopeful and affirming vision that ennobles and energizes people in their Christian walk.
