In this article, Robert D. Jones examines the popular notion of self-forgiveness and analyzes the deeper causes of an inability to experience forgiveness. Jones argues that the issue of self-forgiveness points to key misunderstandings by the counselee: They may not grasp God’s forgiveness, may not acknowledge the depth of depravity, may be venting regrets for failure to attain a cherished desire, may be establishing their own standards of righteousness or may be declaring themselves to the final judge and arbiter.
